Peru, Ecuador and Colombia imported more than 181 thousand kilograms of seeds valued at 26.7 million dollars, CIF value

During the first half of 2022, the import of seeds had a variation of -8.9% in kilograms and -8.7% compared to the reported value over the same 2021 period.

A study by CVN – Virtual Business Center revealed that between January and June of 2022, three Latin American countries: Peru, Ecuador and Colombia imported 181,509 kilograms of seeds associated within 15 product categories: tomato, carrot, onion, pepper, broccoli, watermelon, cucumber, melon, cauliflower, lettuce, pumpkin squash, spinach, cabbage, string beans and eggplant, for an amount that cost $26,684,069 dollars, CIF value.

Carrot, spinach, tomato and onion seeds are among the most imported seeds during the first half of 2022.

The data from the data specialist firm shows that from the 15 types of products already analyzed, carrot seeds lead the ranking by weight with a participation of 43.6%, that is to say a little more than 79 thousand kilograms, while the tomato seeds were the most representative by merchandise value with a 23.9% of the total, equivalent to USD$6.4 million CIF value:

It is worth mentioning that according to the merchandise value, the following are listed as the 5 most imported types of seeds: tomato (23.9%), onion (14.6%), carrot (16.3%), pepper (13.9%) and broccoli (8.2%).

Top 5 most imported seed brands in Ecuador, Peru and Colombia:

In its study, CVN includes relevant data on the most important brands in the seed market for the 15 product included categories, highlighting that 5 of them represent 46.1% of the market according to the merchandise’s weight as shown below:

  • Takiseed: totaled 27.9 thousand kilograms, equivalent to a 15.4% stake. Carrot, spinach, onion, cauliflower and cabbage seeds belong mainly to this brand.
  • Foods: has an 11.5% stake with 20.8 thousand kilograms corresponding exclusively to carrot seeds.
  • Vilmorin: It is the third brand with 17.4 thousand kilograms, that is, 9.6% of total imports; in this case, carrot, cauliflower, pepper, lettuce and tomato seeds make up the type of product associated with the brand.
  • Seminis: It ranks fourth with 5.4% of imports represented by 9.7 thousand kilograms, which corresponds mainly to string beans, onions, carrots, pepper and lettuce.
  • Suba Seeds: closes the ranking with 8 thousand kilograms and a participation of 4.4%, an amount related mainly to string beans, carrots, spinach, tomato and cabbage.

Meanwhile, the 5 brands that contributed with the highest CIF value to the total imported by this market in the South American neighboring countries, include the following:

  • Seminis: it leads with 15.3% of the market, valued at USD$4 million CIF, and in first instance associated with pepper seeds, tomato, carrot, watermelon and lettuce.
  • Sakata: it has a 10.6 stake with USD$2.8 million, mainly related to broccoli, squash, pepper, watermelon and tomato.
  • Takii Sed: it is in third place with 9.8% of the imported value, that is, USD$2.6 million CIF, which corresponds mainly to carrot, tomato, spinach, cauliflower and cabbage seeds.
    1. Bejo Zadenit: added USD$1.7 million CIF and has 6.2% of imports, which corresponds mostly to carrots, cauliflower, onion, tomato and cucumber.
  • BHN: closes the ranking with 6.1% of the market represented by merchandise valued at USD$1.6 million that corresponds solely to tomato seeds.

Which country imports the largest amount of seeds in Latin America?

According to the official figures of the three territories, Peru is the largest importer, followed by Ecuador and Colombia, which alternates in second and third place according to the weight and the total value of imports as is shown in the following graphs:

  • Perú: A greater number of kilograms of carrot (38.1%), spinach (23.5%), onion (12.6%), lettuce (9.0%) and cauliflower (4.9%) seeds entered their territory); Likewise, Pepper (24.1%), onion (21.3%), carrot (16%), tomato (12.7%) and watermelon (6.5%) they make up the top 5 of the most imported products on regards to the total imported value.
  • Ecuador: It mainly imported kilos of carrot seeds (63.7%), broccoli (9.1%), spinach (6.2%), tomato (5.4%) and watermelon (4.6%); In addition, when reviewing the CIF value, the following products stand out: tomato (34%), broccoli (19.4%), carrot (12.9%), pepper (7%) and watermelon (6.3%).
  • Colombia: mainly bought abroad, seeds by kilos of carrots (23.8%), onion (21.8%), string beans (20%), pumpkin squash (6.2%) and spinach (5.6%); Meanwhile, the most imported products due to the cost of the merchandise are: tomato (28.6%), carrot (18.1%), onion 15.8%), pepper (7.3%) and watermelon (6.8%). %).
